South Bend
South Bend is located in the north of the US state of Indiana and is its fourth most populous city. It is the regional capital of St. Joseph County, there are around 120,000 residents, but the entire metropolitan area has more than 320,000 residents. South Bend is located along the Indiana Toll Road, at a bend in the St. Joseph River, which also gave the town its name. The area was first settled by fur traders in the early 19th century. The town was founded in 1865 thanks to various merchants and traders who settled here. The city’s strategic location and its accessibility by water led to the development of heavy industry. The first companies and industrial enterprises were also established here, such as Studebaker or the Oliver Chilled Plow Company.
Today, the largest industries include healthcare, education and small businesses. Many people are employed by Bosch, AM General or Crowe Horwath. The city’s economy is also largely supported by tourism. The city is home to 8 colleges and a number of universities, the most famous of which is the University of Notre Dame. The second busiest airport in Indiana is located in South Bend, which connects it with cities such as Chicago, Cleveland, Detroit, Minneapolis, Las Vegas, Orlando, Tampa, Cincinnati and Atlanta.
Public transport in the city is provided by buses that connect the center with the suburbs. All buses here are environmentally friendly. The South Shore Line electric commuter rail is also in operation, connecting the airport to the Millennium Station underground station in downtown Chicago. Amtrak operates train service to other major cities.
The city’s main tourist attractions include the Center for History, which is the second oldest historical society in Indiana. It began operations in 1867 and continues to interpret the history of the northern Indiana region to visitors today. The center is located in a castle from 1895, which is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. You can also visit the Museum of Local History, the Studebaker National Museum, the South Bend Museum of Art or the Morris Performing Arts Center. Cultural life is also provided by the South Bend Civic Theatre, founded in 1957.
The Potawatomi Zoo, which is the oldest zoo in Indiana, was opened in 1902 on the outskirts of the city. Here you can see more than 400 animals on an area of 23 acres. In addition to this garden, South Bend boasts many other parks that are used for recreational purposes. Every year, the city is the scene of the Christian music festival World Pulse Festival, which is regularly visited by more than 50 thousand visitors.
