City Council

Meaning of City Council

The first step before entering fully to analyze the term town hall that concerns us now, is to establish its etymological origin. In doing so we discover that it emanates from Latin, and more precisely from the word “iugum”, which can be translated as “yoke”.

Abbreviated as CC by AbbreviationFinder, the city council is the corporation formed by the mayor or mayor and the councilors who are in charge of the political administration of a municipality. The term is used as a synonym for municipality or municipal corporation. For example: “The City Council has called a plebiscite to decide on the destination of the funds”, “Romero reported that he will run as a candidate in the next elections for the City Council”, “The City Hall building is one of the most beautiful in the city ”.

The mayor is the head of the council, who is in charge of local administration. The councilors or councilors, for their part, have regulatory authority within the municipality. Typically, the city council is the administrative body closest to the citizen by rank, although larger cities may have administrative subdivisions into districts, delegations or neighborhoods.

The councilors or councilors, for their part, are those who are in charge of each of the municipal government areas. Thus, the usual thing is that the councilor for sports, health, traffic, culture, infrastructure… It is important that among all those, the mayor designates who or who will perform the functions of deputy mayor, that is,, who will replace him when he is not in the municipality.

With regard to the form of work that is carried out by councilors and the mayor, the following tools stand out:
• Government Commission. It is made up of the mayor, who will preside over it, and the councilors who are appointed by him.
• Plenary. This is celebrated when both the aforementioned mayor and the rest of the councilors of the political formations that make up the council are gathered. At the beginning of each legislature, it will be determined how often it will take place and it will address issues related to the election and replacement of the former, the control and supervision of the governing bodies, the organic regulations and ordinances, credit operations or contracting. of goods and services works. In addition to this, it must be stated that the plenary session will consist of a previously established agenda and that the agreements will be adopted, except for exceptions, by majority.

In Argentina, for example, localities that meet certain requirements related to population and economic development are known as municipalities. These corporations, analogous to what would be the city council of other countries, are governed by an intendant (like a mayor) and a deliberative council.

Chile, Colombia and Peru are other nations where the most common concept to refer to these institutions is municipality. In Spain, on the other hand, the municipal government body is called the town hall.

The notion of town hall is also used to name the main headquarters of the corporation, which can also be mentioned as the town hall: “Tomorrow there will be a demonstration in front of the town hall”, “The guided tour of the town hall has a fee of 200 pesos and lasts two hours ”.
