What does FTP Stand for

FTP

The protocol FTP (File Transfer Protocol) is used to transfer files between PCs using different operating systems. Developed model “client-server”, realized between two application process: one serving (FTP-server) and the other is a client (FTP – client). Usually, data is transmitted from FTP – server to FTP-client. The reverse transmission is not always allowed.

What does FTP Stand for

In order to realize the required FTP ID and password. Most servers support “anonymous FTP”, but only to free accessible directories. If in this case to obtain a requirement for “Login”, the user enters “guest” or “anonymous”, but instead of a password, your e-mail.

An FTP protocol is Internet service to transfer files in ASCII or BINARY format between two computers connected the network. The service is operated by a protocol such as an upgrade of the TCP / IP protocol. FTP is a very useful tool especially for transferring files or software whales with large volume. If within a building or complex have access to the Internet or to a subnet, it becomes possible to significantly easier to use the resources of other participants in the network, regardless of their platforms. For example, a scanned color image file forms with large volume and its transfer to another computer for further processing or printing is done in seconds via FTP protocol. Search and copy drivers for video controllers, scanners, printers, modules for upgrading licensed software (Patches), various utilities, training programs, descriptions, documentation standards, sound files, video clips, animation, games and much more things can be drawn under this Protocol.

Making an FTP connection between two computers on the Internet network and conduct a session requires the execution of a sequence of actions by the client (FTP client) in the process of establishing a connection and retrieve information from the file server (FTP server) correspondent computer. These actions presuppose knowledge of a not great multitude of commands for this protocol. Knowledge of the basic commands is recommended even in cases where use software upgrades from the menu or dialog type. Actions performed during an FTP session is good to know which ensures proper and foremost collegial using the potential of this service.

The protocol FTP supports two compounds simultaneously: one for management (handover);the second data transmission. The client sends to the server are three types of commands:

  1. Commands for access control:
    • USER and PASS user identification;
    • CWD-to change the current directory on the remote computer;
    • REIN-to reset the parameters of the compound and reset;
    • QUIT-the disintegration of the compound and FTP – session.
  2. Commands for managing data flow:
    • PROT-which of the two modules will be active or passive with PASV;
    • MODE-type of transfer;
    • TYPE-data type (ASCII or Image);
    • STRU-data structure.
  3. Service commands:
    • RETR-data transmission from the server to the client;
    • STOR-data transmission from client to server;
    • RNFR and RNTO-rename a file;
    • DELE-delete the file;
    • MKD-creating a file;
    • RMD-delete a directory;
    • LIST, NLIST-displaying the contents of the directory.

The protocol FTP can be used to transmit files between two servers under management computer on the network.

Protocol TFTP (Trivial FTP) is a simplified version of FTP – used transport services of UDP protocol with the application of its own method for delivery of data. TPTP – split the file into equal blocks of 512 bytes and uses a start-stop mode of transmission block by block to receiving a positive acknowledgment for proper reception.

The protocol SFTP (Simple FTP) occupies a middle place between FTP and TFTP. Work on the scheme request-response. Use commands such as read, write, rename, delete, view the contents of directories, changing the current directory.

FTP service is based on the interaction over the Internet to a FTP client that comes in contact via FTP protocol FTP server. A client’s applications are available for all computer platforms in the form of freeware, shareware or comercialeware. Statements realizing FTP Server are relatively few and cover all computer platforms.

The World the Wild widely used the Web service to FTP. Some sites have available HTTP software so to make their information accessible through the network, they place their HTML documents to FTP servers. FTP access is so widespread that hardly spend a few minutes on the Internet without Meet FTP transfer.
