What does IUPAC Stand for

International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry

Iupac is the acronym of International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry, which in Portuguese means International Union of pure and applied chemistry. Founded in 1919 by chemists that acted in industry and academia, the Union is now composed of more than 50 Member States and 20 countries, represented by some 1000 professionals from chemistry.

The main objective of Iupac is to promote the chemical sciences worldwide and make it possible for them to be at the service of humanity. For this, the Union is dedicated to various activities, divided into eight categories: physical chemistry and Biophysics; Inorganic Chemistry; Organic and Biomolecular Chemistry; Polymers; Analytical Chemistry; Chemistry and environment; Chemistry and human health; Chemical Nomenclature and structure Representation. The standardization of classifications is undoubtedly the best known role of Iupac.
