What does LED Mean

The LED is a semiconductor electronic components, namely, an led (L.E. D = Light emitting diode), the same technology used in computer chips, which have the property of transforming electrical energy into light. Such a transformation is different from that found in conventional lamps using metal filaments, ultraviolet radiation and discharge of gases, among others. In LEDs, the transformation of electrical energy into light is made in this area and therefore it is called solid (Solid State).

What does LED Mean

The LED is a component of bipolar type, i.e. has a terminal called anode and another, called cathode. Depending on how it is polarized, allows or not the passage of electric current and, consequently, the generation of light.

Below, in Figure 1, we have the schematic and symbolic representation of an LED.

The most important component of a LED is semiconductor chip responsible for generating light. This chip has very small dimensions, as can be seen in Figure 2, where a conventional LED and its components.

In Figure 3, we present a power LED, in which we can observe the increased complexity in the components, in order to ensure a better performance for applications that require higher reliability and efficiency.

HISTORY

Despite being a very component LED commented today, your invention, by Nick Holonyac, happened in 1963, only in red color, with low light intensity (1 mcd). For a long time, the LED was used only for status indication, i.e. in radios, televisions and other equipment, signaling if the appliance was connected or not.
The yellow LED was introduced at the end of 60 years. Only around 1975 the first green LED – with a wavelength around 550 nm, which is very close to the yellow wavelength, but with intensity a bit larger, on the order of a few dozen millicandelas.
During the years 80, with the introduction of technology Al ln GaP, the LEDs of the color red and amber have achieved levels of light intensity that made it possible to speed up the process of replacing bulbs, mainly in the automotive industry.
However, only in the early 90, with the emergence of InGaN technology was possible to obtain smaller wavelength LEDs, in blue, green and cyan, this technology allowed the production of white LED, cobrinho, so the whole color spectrum.
Until then, all these LEDs at maximum of 4,000 to 8,000 millicandelas, with an emission angle between 8 to 30 degrees. That’s when, in the late 90, appeared the first Luxeon power LED, which was responsible for a real revolution in the technology of LEDs, as it featured a luminous flux (luminous intensity) of the order of 30 to 40 lumens and with an angle of emission of 110 degrees.
Nowadays, we have LEDs that attain the mark of 120 lumens of luminous flux, and with power of 1.0-3.0 and 5.0 watts, available in various colors, responsible for the considerable increase in the replacement of some types of lamps in various lighting applications.

THE LEDS DO NOT RELEASE HEAT

The light emitted by the LEDs is cold due to the presence of the infrared light beam. However, the LEDs release the power dissipated in the form of heat and this is a factor that should be taken into consideration when designing a device with LEDs, for failure to observe this fact may lead the LED to a sharp deterioration of your luminous flux, as well as reducing your lifespan. Much of the power applied to the LED is transformed into heat and the use of heat sinks should be considered so that the heat generated is dissipated properly, allowing the semiconductor junction temperature (Tj) is within the limits specified by the manufacturer. In Figure 4 we present an illustration of a conventional LED 5 mm and we can observe the path of the power dissipated in the form of heat is the same electric current, and this provision is made for the win of copper printed circuit board. In Figure 5, we present a power LED package, in which we can observe that the thermal and electrical paths are separated and the withdrawal of heat is made through a coupling heat sink LED based, assuring a better dissipation.

BENEFITS IN THE USE OF LEDS

* Longer life: depending on the application, the service life of the equipment is long, without the need for exchange. It is considered as service life minimum maintenance of light equal to 70% after 50,000 hours of use

* Reduced maintenance costs: on the basis of your long service life, maintenance is much smaller, representing lower costs.

* Efficiency: greater efficiency incandescnetes lamps and halogen lamps and, today, very close to the efficiency of fluorescent (around 50 lumens/Watt) but this number is likely to increase in the future.

* Low operating voltage: does not represent danger to the installer.

* Resistance to impacts and vibrations: Uses solid state technology, so no filaments, glass, etc., increasing your strength.

* Dynamic color control: With proper use, you can obtain a varied spectrum of colors, including various shades of white, allowing a perfect fit of the desired color temperature.

* Instant Activation: instant activation, even when There is operating at low temperatures.

* Variable Intensity control: Your luminous flux is variable depending on the variation of electric current applied to it, making it, with it, a precise adjustment of the light intensity of the lamp.

* Vivid and saturated without filters: Emits monochromatic wavelength, which means emission of light in the right color, (see spectrum of colors) making it more vivid and saturated. The colored LEDs do not require the use of filters that cause loss of intensity and cause a change in color, especially in external fixtures due to the action of ultraviolet radiation from the Sun

* Direct light, increasing the efficiency of the system: though still not be the most efficient light source, lighting fixture can be obtained with high efficiency, due to the possibility of directing of the light emitted by the LED.

* Environmentally friendly: it does not use mercury or any other element that causes damage to nature.

* Absence of ultraviolet: do not emit ultraviolet radiation being ideal for applications where this type of radiation is undesirable. Ex.: Paintings-works of art etc.

* Absence of infrared: Also do not emit infrared radiation, causing the beam to be cold.
